"When Love Takes Over" part 2
Part [1 - 2]
I don't care if he had sex during the prom episode, I refuse to believe that Sav is not a virgin.
At the play rehearsal, Adam meets up with Clare and Ellie and tells them Fiona is not here because she is sleeping in. He implies it is because they were getting busy somehow last night. In truth, we know she is nursing a hangover. Ellie congratulations Adam for doing whatever Adam is capable of.
Anya's mom drops her off to school. This is when Anya admits to dating Dr. Dorian and lying to him about her age. Anya's mom wants to put a stop to this, but come on, the doctor did save her life. She kind of owes him.
Holly J talks to Fiona about Adam. She is concerned that Fiona is drinking too much and Adam isn't good for her. Holly J does admit, "I've never seen you with someone like him before." But who has Holly J seen Fiona with besides her brother? Fiona will not listen to her. "Adam sent me roses," says Fiona glowingly, "White, my favorite. Just like my wine."
Back to Mini-Connor. He is still feeling insecure because he is shorter than his new girlfriend, which is sad because they have so much in common. As White Connor says. "She plays basketball and likes hip hop" and Mini-Connor is black. What confuses me is that the Connors keep calling this girl tall but she isn't, she doesn't even look particularly tall for a girl.
"You better buy her dinner first..," says Connor, " you don't want her to feel short changed."
"Don't sell yourself short," White Connor says later. Man, this is cleverest writing we've seen from Degrassi in six years.
Holly J and Anya are setting up for the Lover's Lunch in the caf, which has to be just awesome if you are among the 75% of high schoolers who are single. Holly J expresses concern about Anya dating an adult but Anya thinks it is fine. "Everyone knows the rule half your age plus 7," Anya says. Someone needs to tell Anya that's not actually the law.
While all the kids who don't have dates have to go to Burger King, the students in relationships have their special lunch. Adam sits at a table with Ellie and Clare, and they are soon joined by a drunken Fiona. This makes the others feel uncomfortable, but Fiona has shown up to school drunk plenty of times before. They should be used to it.
Fiona keeps coming on to Clare, so Adam escorts his girl out of the caf. Adam expresses concern about her drinking, which causes Fiona to admit that drinking makes it easier for her to be with him. Oh no!
Anya has lunch with Dr. Dorian in some sort of doctor's office. It isn't the hospital caf, which is good because those places blow. When my grandma was dying three years ago, I thought at least I would be able to check out the hospital caf. For some reason, I had pumped up the awesomeness of hospital cafeterias in my mind. Looking back, it was a really weird thing to look forward to, because this caf was half-way between my high school caf and my college caf in terms of quality, and a hamburger cost $7. Of course, I took my $2.75 elsewhere.
Anya is just about to confess that she is 17, when Dr. Dorian pops out two tickets to a Renaissance Fair. If you recall, Anya is really into LARPIng and this is like a ticket to Disneyworld for her, or like a ticket to the Mall of America amusement park for me.
The Renaissance Fair will be in Ithaca (New York?) which is a long drive. Anya says she has to talk to her mom about this, which she worries will blow her cover, but most of the kids I knew in college would have needed their parent's permission to travel that far. But they also could have been on probation, for all I know.
Adam, Clare and Ellie are at a play practice, but Fiona isn't there, so they decide to leave. I'm sorry, is Fiona the only actor in this play?
Fiona enters the room. She tells Adam that she drinks for his sake and is failing in love with him. Adam decides to stay with Fiona because, really, Fiona is not any more crazy than most girls her age.
Anya is all packed to leave with Dr. Dorian, when Anya's mom stops her. She was going to sneak away? Like, I think school is still in session, too. Anya's mom makes her tell Dr. Dorian the truth, and the doctor makes a look like, oh my God, I'm going to be arrested. He was so looking forward to this. He bought a sidecar for his scooter just for Anya.
The next day at school, Fiona and Adam are all love-y together. Fiona wants to take him to get a latte in Paris or Rome. I told you Fiona so drunk she doesn't know where she is. Holly J has a chat with Adam in which she accuses him of enabling Fiona's drinking, because Holly J certainly never took advantage of Fiona.
Adam tells Fiona that the two of them should just leave, so they do. I'm glad all these kids are getting back to the time honored Degrassi tradition of skipping school.
Back at the condo, Fiona has passed out and Adam finally sees how much of a problem her drinking is. Can you imagine how bad that place would look/smell if it had a carpet?
Adam leads Fiona by a blindfold to her intervention. Holly J and Fiona's mom are the only two people there. Declan can't attend as he is now at Fox...Fox River, Nova Scotia, that is. He's interning there for a semester.
They want Fiona to go to rehab, but Fiona gets upset and tells Adam to leave. I think everyone should cut Fiona some slack. Sure she drinks a a lot, but she just went from passed out to sober at the drop of a hat.
At the pizza place in the alley, Anya and Dr. Dorian meet again. Anya says she will turn 18 in two months and Dr. Dorian agrees to talk to her then. Soon Anya will be with the man who she suspected was gay just a couple of months ago. Just be careful how much you two touch one another right now, I think I can see a janitor waiting in the bushes with a spy camera and I suspect he is up to no good.
Holly J finds Adam at the Dot, tells him Fiona is in rehab and gives the boy a page from Fiona's diary. Holly J found it when she was rummaging through Fiona's papers trying to find her Social Security number. In it, Fiona writes about how much she loves and misses him. Fiona says, "It would be easier if I didn't feel this way, because there are a million reason why this shouldn't work." Yeah, I'm pretty sure Fiona wrote that about Declan.
Part [1 - 2]
I found it interesting that Holly J was playing the best friend to two girls who were each having boyfriend issues. It would have been funny if she would have gotten them mixed up at some point. Anya would be confused and Fiona would believe Adam is a doctor.
Here's why I gave this episode an A. At the alley pizza place, when Holly J had to pretend to be choking, Anya calls out "Help we need a doctor!" But when the man behind them gets up, Anya nips at him, "Sit." because she wants Dr. Dorian to come to the rescue. I don't know, despite the fact that this takes place in a set that was put together in six minutes, and the scene it is a part of is 100% dumb, I found this little moment to be cute and funny, just like Anya.
I guess I am giving this high marks because I never thought the writers would be clever enough to include something like this. I am skeptical that the writers even know how to read and don't live in a group home for mentally-challenged adults.
Does It Go There? Sure
"When Love Takes Over" Drinking Game:
Drink whenever Fiona drinks.
I tried to watch this online on teennick.com, which was a pain. First, it wouldn't even load the episode until I disabled Adblock, which is ridiculous. Then, the video would keep buffering and buffering like this was RealPlayer in 2001. Y'all have no idea what I am talking about because most Degrassi viewers weren't even born in 2001.
