"Coming of Age"

Season 1 Episode 9
Canadian airdate: December 16th, 2001

Boycott the Caf name: "Emma Gets Her Period"
Important characters: Emma, Jimmy, Ashley
Issue of the Week: Menstruation

As usual, there are two plots in this episode. I'm going to get the B plot out of the way first, because it's no where near as awesome as the A plot. Not even close. In fact, the A plot will blow your mind so badly that you need to proper time to wait to prepare yourself for its awesomeness. I now present the boring storyline first.

Jimmy's birthday is coming up and he'll be fourteen. Ashley is getting sick of Jimmy always coming over to her house every night to eat. Jimmy's parents are never home, which is why he is constantly hanging around Ashley's every day. Ashley tries to get him away for a day by spending the afternoon with Terri, and is angry when she finds Jimmy playing basketball with Toby in their front yard. You know Jimmy's getting desperate when he has to hang out with Toby of all people.

The next day, some girls get Jimmy with silly string. Either they are wishing him a happy birthday or sending him a message that niggers aren't welcomed at Degrassi. At any rate, Toby tells Jimmy that Ashley is getting sick of him.

Ashley comes over to Jimmy's house for his birthday party. This is when we learn that Jimmy is from the future. Look at his house--everything is made of metal and run by computers. You can't put a house like that together in this century. No, Jimmy is from the future. He must be studying our primitive time period for scientific research.

Anyway, Jimmy's parents aren't home for his birthday; they are working late observing our culture. Jimmy gets mad and tells Ashley to leave. He knows she wants to break up with him. Jimmy then calls the KFC and orders his usual bucket of fried chicken.

The next day, Jimmy and Ashley make up. Blah, blah, blah.

Ok, now that that shit is out of the way, it's time to get to the good part of the show. Grabs your socks, because this part of the episode is so cool, it will knock them right off.

Emma has been on an emotional rollercoaster all day. At school, she barks at Manny and Sean for believing in astrology while Emma is a woman of science. At home, she balls while watching a soap opera. Her mom, Spike, assumes Emma is having a bad day so takes her shopping.

At the mall, Spike and Emma pass by some dirty old man who says he'd like a lick of that cone. I'm sure he's talking about her ice cream and not her ass. First off, it looks like they have some tasty ice cream there, and secondly, neither Spike or Emma have that nice of an ass, even by white women standards. Spike reads the comment differently and tells the pervert off.

It's a brand new day and Emma is proud of the new clothes she bought. She and Manny are sitting outside when Sean walks by and apologizes for getting Emma mad yesterday. Sean is, as always, looking awesome as he drinks some delicious milk and sports a menacing scowl. Emma can't help but be captivated by Sean's good looks and asks if Sean would like to look at astrology websites together.

Oh no! Something happened to Emma's skirt. Manny pulls her back. The girls bail on Sean, as Manny covers Emma's ass with a notebook while they make their way to the bathroom. Emma must have pooped herself.

Shit, that's a lot of blood. Did someone stab Emma in the ass? Seriously, in case you missed the innuendo earlier in the episode, it's now apparent that Emma has had her first period. Oh yeah, Degrassi goes there.

Manny runs off to get some gym shorts for Emma. Left alone, who should enter but Paige. Paige sits down to take a dump and hands Emma a mini pad. You know, this is the only time the whole season that Paige acts nice. She is actually helpful here as she explained the changes of becoming a woman to Emma and us. Maybe Paige's soul isn't completely black.

Manny finds some oversized gym shorts for Emma and the girls go off to give their book report in front of Ms. Kwan's class. JT heckles Emma and asks if she wet herself. Emma shoots JT the evil eye look at states matter-of-factly that she is having her period. Ms. Kwan's has Emma's back here and agrees that is it perfectly natural. JT is put in his punk ass place.

Sean's eyebrow perks up and he smiles. Sean is turned on by menstruation.

Later on, Emma is seen gathering signatures for her petition to have a tampon dispenser put in the girl's bathroom. Emma has gotten over her anxiety and is truly coming of age.

Grade: A+
Even though it didn't have any Spinner, this turned out to be one kick ass episode. Emma's period made this one of Degrassi's Greatest Hits. Truth be told, this was one of the first episodes we at Boycott the Caf ever saw, and helped us fall in love with the show. If Emma had shot out blood right from the beginning, and if that Jimmy and Ashley bullshit filler plot was removed, this episode would even be better than "Rumours and Reputations." Still, it's great episode and I was thoroughly entertained. Plus, I learned from Paige that you are not supposed to wear light colors when you are having your period.

Intensity Level: 100% Intense
Emma's period is everything 100% Intense means. Jesus, that was a lot of blood. We're talking 100% Menstruation.
