This episode features a large dose of Ms. Kwan, the Degrassi English teacher. Since there are only four teachers at Degrassi,
Kwan continually teaches English to all students every year. "Friday Night" is her
most prominent episode and the only one so far where she appears in more than one
scene.
We begin in Ms. Kwan's class.
Ms. Kwan is handing out permission slips for a field trip and gets annoyed
because someone is making a
tapping sound and won't stop. The sound is coming
from Spinner, who is listening to rocking tunes on his CD player. Kwan sentences Spinner
to Friday after school detention.
Later on,
Jimmy and Ashley make out in the hallway, when Kwan comes by and orders them to
cut it out. She also tells them that no one thinks they are cute, which is a
pretty harsh thing for a teacher to say. Actually, it seems like what any
teacher would say in that situation because junior high kids need to be put in
their place. At any rate, Jimmy
is mad that Kwan cut short his attempt to feel up a white girl's titties in
school.
Ms. Kwan is late to come into class. Not wanting to let the students be deprived
of an education in the teacher's absence, Spinner puts his Ph.D in English
Literature to good use and lectures the class about Shakespeare. Jimmy asks a
few questions concerning the Bard that Dr. Spinner is more than happy to answer.
The class enjoys the lesson.
Kwan comes in and is jealous of being outdone by the Spinster. Because she
has already
sentenced Spinner to detention today she can't punish him anymore, so her only
option is to reprimand Spinner's negro sidekick in his place. Jimmy now has
detention with Spinner.
What I went to know is whether this scene takes place a day after or the same
day as the previous scene in Kwan's class. Ms. Kwan only wears one outfit during
this entire episode, so it would most likely take place during the same day, but
this means that the eighth graders have two English classes a day. Therefore, as
far as I can tell, the schedule for a student at Degrassi consists of Media Immersion,
Gym, two English classes, Math, and a two hour lunch break. I have no idea if
that can be considered a well rounded education, but the long lunch break
explains why the kids can put on talent shows, clean up forests, and generally
cause so much mischief during that time.
Spinner and Jimmy spend the Friday after school in detention. Jimmy occupies his
time doing homework, while Spinner reads the collected works of Plato in their original
Greek. Ms. Kwan is supervising this detention and mentions she will be teaching
a night class afterward. A light bulb goes off in Spinner's head as he concocts a
plan to seek revenge on the Wrath of Kwan.
Getting to the B plot,
Sean arrives at Emma's house to pick her up for their first date. Spike takes a
picture of the two with the oddest fucking camera I have ever seen. Outside, a
bird shits on Emma's coat.
Later that evening,
Ms. Kwan is teaching her night class where she helps dirty brown people learn
English. Spinner and Jimmy have snuck into the principal's office to get their
fiendish scheme underway.
Operation Drive Kwan Insane - Phase I: Spinner and Jimmy turn on the intercom
that goes from Principal Raditch's office to Ms. Kwan's class. Spinner makes gum
chewing noises into the microphone. Ms. Kwan tells her students to please stop
chewing gum, but the sound won't stop.
Operation Drive Kwan Insane - Phase II:
Spinner calls the pizza place and has over $50 worth of hot wings sent to Ms.
Kwan's class. Kwan is stressed out by this, but the brown people are more than
happy to pay for the hot wigs.
Operation Drive Kwan Insane - Phase III:
Spinner and Jimmy top the night off by egging Ms. Kwan's car. This last part really isn't up to the same level as their previous schemes, but it's late and they already had the eggs from their aborted Operation: Cake Back plan. They hide when
Kwan comes out. Kwan takes a look at her car and breaks into tears.
Spinner
smiles the sweet smile of satisfaction.
Meanwhile, Sean is searching through garbage looking for Emma's wallet.
They went to a fast food restaurant and Emma thinks she accidentally threw it
out with her tray. It turns out Emma had the wallet in her jacket all along, and
is quite chagrined when she finds it. Emma, that was a real Liberty move there.
You should be ashamed.
Emma is worried it's over between them, but the next day Sean asks her out again,
because he doesn't mind scrounging through garbage. Sean is poor, so he is used
to doing it all the time in search of food anyway.
That same day in Ms. Kwan's class, Jimmy and Spinner regal everyone with the
tale of what they did last night. Spinner attracts the coolest crowds, as
evidenced by that one guy with the
bright red hair who must be in a punk band, because no one would sport both
bright red hair and a tie without being a member
of a punk band. Spinner is friends with the Sex Pistols.
Mr. Raditch enters the classroom and informs the students that Ms. Kwan has taken
a leave of absence. Ms. Kwan's husband is in the hospital and the added stress
of her job was just too much for her.
Spinner you won this round you sexy beast. Congrats. You won't be in detention
for another Friday night.
Rating: A
A second classic Spinner episode in a row. Degrassi is on a role here. "Coming of Age",
"Rumours and Reputations", and this episode occurring back to back means Degrassi is on a hell of hot streak.
I would give it an A+, because this episode is perfect. But nothing from this
season can match "Rumours and Reputations." Also I want to know why the fuck Kwan
uses the title Ms, even though she has a husband.
Intensity: 131% Intense
Yes, an episode can be more than 100% Intense. It happens when you send a teacher to the madhouse.
Deleted Scene: (What you can only see on the DVD)
This is a blooper from the scene where the bird shits on Emma. There are two
outtakes where the bird poop lands on her head. I don't think that is bird poop, but actually Spinner standing on the roof of the building above
Emma and just squirting his semen on her head. That's the kind of pranks Spinner
pulls around the set
