"Cabaret"Season 1 Episode 13
Canadian airdate: February 17th, 2002
At Ashley's house, she and Terri are rehearsing their song for the up coming Degrassi Lunch Time Cabaret. Ashley does all the work writing their song, a slow piano number. Terri spends the time looking at tarot card and ouija board websites while saying mystic chants. I would want Terri to pull her weight and help out with the song, but that's a lot of weight to pull, and Ashley happens to be the only one on the show right now with any musical ability.
We jump to school. Paige wants to join Ashley and Terri's group, Two Girls and a Keyboard, but Terri says Ashley wouldn't allow it. Paige would sex up the band more than Ashley would care for.
On the seventh grade front, Emma and Manny are planning on doing "a poetic dance on an environmental theme" where they dance as panthers, and want Sean to play a hunter in it. Sean blows them off. You have to hand it to Sean, it takes some badass to turn down his girlfriend like he did. Most boyfriends would turn into their nutsacks and agree to perform, a few braver men would politely decline. But Sean just calls their whole idea stupid and walks away. Kick ass.
With Sean refusing to participate, Emma falls back to her favorite bitch, Toby, who jumps at the chance to be around her and agrees to play the hunter.
In Media Immersion, the students are giving Power Point presentations a topic of their choice. Terri discusses her interest in the Satanic Arts, and requests a volunteer for her ouija board. Spinner jumps up to ask the board for guidance. Since Spinner is the son of God, he has nothing to fear from the black magic.
Spinner asks the oujia board if he is really a super stud. Mr. Simpson lays back in the corner, tells Spinner we don't need a oujia board to figure that out and to ask another question. Someone has a creepy man love for Spinner.
Spinner then asks the board what the name of his first pet was. Terri spells out Rocky, which was indeed Spinner's first cat. Everyone is impressed with the dark power Terri wields.
Outside, Terri performs a tarot card reading for Manny. Terri predicts Manny's day will end with a twist. Manny asks what that means.
Terri's eyes glisten with fire as she says rather evilly, "It means you should watch out." Manny gets scared and runs away.
Paige sits down and asks if she should join their group and slips Terri a tarot card under the table. Terri picks out that card and proclaims it means that Paige should be allowed in.
Ashley has doubts about Terri's power to channel the dark prince, because she still does not want Paige in the group. Terri points out she was able to tell what Spinner's pet's name was. Ashley retorts that Spinner told her about his cat a month ago. Spinner did the presentation right before Terri on his pet cat Rocky.
But Satan works in mysterious ways and we witness Manny twist her ankle. HER DAY ENDED WITH A TWIST! Terri's prophecy came true. Ashley is too fearful to defy the oracles anymore and allows Paige in their cabaret act.
Paige immediately gets to work revamping the group. She proposes renaming it from "Three Girls and a Keyboard" to "Paige Michalchuk and the Sex Kittens," much to Ashley's chagrin.
The two want to speed up Ashley's song and make it more pop, but since they know Ashley won't approve, they go to Mr. Simpson to use fancy Media Immersion technology. Look at Mr. Simpson face, damn that's a psychotic look. He tells the girls "Y'all ready for this?" then proceeds to whip his dick out in front of them. Actually, he just adds another electronic effect to the song, but you can tell what he was really thinking about doing.
Ashley walks in and is angry that they have redone her song. The three agree to resolve this dispute by consulting the devil once more. According to Terri's tarot card reading, they should go with the new version.
It's the next day (I think) and Lunch Time Caberat is about to begin.
Since Manny injured her ankle, she can't dance. So Toby assumes his role as Emma's butt boy, sucks in what little dignity he had before, and instead of playing the hunter, dances as a panther. What a loser.
The audience thinks the same thing and bursts out laughing at the performance. Sean can't stand that people are laughing at his girlfriend so he goes into crazy mode, gets up and yells at the audience to shut up and let them dance. Everyone is too afraid that Sean will kill them, so they all pipe down.
Ashley is still upset with the changes to the song and refuses to go onstage. Paige and Terri perform without her and they do some interesting choreography. In the first screen cap, we see Paige rubbing her pussy, because that is what is most important to her, while Terri rubs her stomach for the same reason. In the second screen cap, Paige gets behind Terri for the crazy four armed person effect, which works really well since Paige is easily engulfed behind Terri's giant ass. The crowd goes wild.
After the show, Emma runs up to Sean and kisses him for shutting up the crowd during her performance. Toby feels like a douche.
Ashley meets Paige and Terri in the bathroom and admits that they had an good idea for the song and the audience really liked it. She is invited back into the group.
Terri then throws away her taro cards. She is tired of worshipping Satan. Having her bed rock violently every night, and seeing blood coming down her bedroom walls is really freaking her out. Plus, the voices in her head telling her to kill her family were making it hard to concentrate on school.
The girls agree to form a new band called PMS. Yes, that's the name. This will be the band that drives away Dean the Rapist next year with the power of rock, which is actually channeling Satan in a different way.
Oh my, hey, hey. What a cabaret.
An average episode. No one is getting boners, finding bugs in the caf, or setting up Marco's first gay dateónothing interesting happens, but as average episodes go, this is one of the better ones. I suppose that makes it a slightly above average chapter of the Degrassi saga.
This is a pretty laid back day at Degrassi, the cabaret drama doesn't add much excitement, because it all centers around a damn cabaret for crying out loud. But Terri's Satan worshipping is worth a good 82 Intensity points. That's pretty intense; I wouldn't have thought Terri was cool enough to worship the devil.
Events in the third and fourth seasons of Degrassi make more sense after looking back at this episode. As you may know, in the third season, Terri got her first boyfriend, Rick, who had a short temper and occasionally beat her. Terri put up with the abuse because it's not like she can be picky about who she dates. Rick ended up putting Terri in coma when he smashed her skull in with a rock.
Terri ended up leaving Degrassi, and is no longer a part of the show. In the fourth season, Rick was picked on by all of Terri's friends for what he did. Rick got so upset he brought a gun to school, shot Jimmy and was killed in a fight with Sean.
A troubled kid who is picked on at school brings in a gun, kills another kid, and dies in a gunfight. Seems like a pretty awesome plot just by itself, but there is more to the story. You see, in "Caberat", we learn that Terri worships Satan. So, Rick must have been some sort of angel sent from Heaven to rid the world of the dark magic of Terri. By hitting Terri with a rock, he was saving us from Terri's evil power. But like Jesus, he had to suffer for his good deeds. He was tortured by the Degrassi students and ultimately died for us. Thank you Rick. We will honor you dieing for our sins every 25th of December.
