"If This Is It"Season 7 Episode 23
Canadian airdate: June 16th, 2008
Exams are coming up and Spinner is in big poo poo. He's only got a 41 so he has got to ace the exam or take the class again and I'm not sure how many times Canada lets you repeat senior year but Spinner has got to be pushing it. They should really just cut Spinner a break, he has cancer after all. Seriously Degrassi teachers, throw him a bone. I don't know any teacher who would actually fail a senior who was trying, especially if they had a life threatening illness.
As an alternative to the exam, the teacher is offering to let students build a bridge out of spaghetti. To pass it has to hold a ten kilo weight. I don't know how much ten kilos is in American but I guess it's like 400 pounds. That's a lot of meatballs! Spinner wants to team up with Jimmy to make this project because Jimmy is smart and will do most of the work. Jimmy agrees to team with Spinner because you aren't allowed to say no to Spinner.
During the credits Spinner found out he is as cancer free as you or me. He celebrates by declaring that he'll have sex with the first girl that can make it to him. Jane hears the call and fights of three other girls to earn her prize. They do it right there without even taking off their clothes. That's how Spinner rolls.
Peter then comes out of nowhere screaming about how Studz has a gig at Woodstock Canada II. I thought that the identity of the members of Studz was supposed to be secret but they are talking very loudly about being in the band right in the hall. They are excited to finally be able to play live because they haven't played live before except for that one time they played live at the school.
Manny and Emma both got acceptance letters from that one college they visited. They then squeal and scream like girls do when they are happy, or when they are upset, or when they see a mouse. Females under the age of 19 react to everything by squealing and screaming. I don't understand it and it is very annoying. Emma says that it says that double occupancy rooms are limited so they better send their housing information in fast so that they can become roommates. This makes no sense since it's pretty much impossible for a freshman to get a single. The people writing for Degrassi don't know this because they never went to college.
Jimmy is taking a picture of Spinner peeing. Spinner is used to it and gives a friendly thumbs up. People always want pictures of his penis. Spinner reveals that he is cancer free and goes to high five Jimmy. Jimmy leaves Spinner hanging until Spinner washes his hand. Good call. Especially when we see Spinner reach into the toilet to get the phone Jimmy dropped. Spinner is awesome but I don't think I'll ever touch his hand after that.
Manny gets her dry cleaning picked up and the dry cleaner gives her a message. Manny's agent, who hasn't done anything for a few years, finally got Manny an audition. Manny doesn't want to go because she is planning to go to college. You would think having a well paying job would be better than college. You can after all always go to college later on in life but the lesson of this episode is that it is better to go to college than to get the job you would want to have after college.
It's time for a band meeting. You can tell Spinner is a little pissed that he has to be seen in public with these losers. When the second coolest person in the group is Peter you know things are weak. Spinner sucks it up for the good of the band. The gig is tomorrow night and everybody but Spinner is worried about not having enough time to study for exams. Spinner's concern is that they don't have enough time to practice. Spinner is after all the only person in the band who knows how to play an instrument.
If Degrassi were X-Men: Evolution then these guys would be the Brotherhood of Mutants. Johnny is Toad, Lucas is the guy who could make earthquakes and that guy in the pink hat is the Blob. Just like the Brotherhood of Mutants, they aren't actually threatening but they try to act like it.
Spinner reminds Johnny that he has kicked Johnny's ass many times in the past even before Johnny does or says anything threatening. Spinner just likes to remind people that he can beat them up. Johnny reveals that the Brotherhood knows Studz's secret identities and are in fact the ones who got them into Woodstock Canada II. I'm not sure why the Brotherhood had this power. The Brotherhood makes a dramatic exit, leaving the members of Studz more confused than anything.
The establishing shot for the next scene tells us it takes place in the big city, sort of like the city of Toronto, you know, where Degrassi takes place, so… yeah, it's the same place as always. Why the establishing shot of the city?
Manny has decided to pursue the acting opportunity since that is the smart thing to do. She gets told that she would have to share her room with the male lead of the show. I assume this part of the episode is to serve as a warning for people who want to join the cast of Degrassi. You want to be part of the Degrassi cast? Guess what, Degrassi doesn't have the budget to get people their own private changing rooms. Going off of a scene later in the episode they actually don't have any changing rooms, although that could have just been the pervert wardrobe guy trying to see Manny naked. Manny learns that the role is fulltime for 8 months so it would be impossible for her to go to college while on the show. Of course she is in the drama department at college so having an acting job kind of defeats the purpose of getting an education in that career.
Jimmy is upset because Spinner isn't helping with the spaghetti bridge. We're supposed to assume it's because he is hanging out with his band too much but I think he just forgot. There was a Meerkat Marathon on last night and he totally had to find out if Kinkajou was going to kill Mozart's pups. Jimmy kicks Spinner off of the project saying he is upset that he always has to bail out Spinner. Seems Jimmy is forgetting when a certain somebody pulled a certain cell phone out of the toilet.
I think the reality is that Jimmy is worried that if he helps Spinner pass science class it may screw up the time matrix and change the future. He doesn't want to have to learn a bunch of new kings when he returns to his own time.
Jimmy also reveals that he knows the true identity of the members of Studz. Damnit, is there anybody who doesn't know the band's secret?
With Jimmy unwilling to let him sponge a free grade Spinner has decided to just give up on passing his exams and is resigned to staying at Degrassi for another year. Jane tells Spinner that she will break up with him if he does this because she doesn't want to date somebody who failed senior year twice. I don't know, if Spinner keeps failing he'll eventually be old enough to buy booze for all his classmates. That would be cool.
Emma is filling out her housing info. She tells Manny that Damien is going to Banting so it is nice that they are still together because she and Manny being together is the only constant in her life right now. Then Manny says she took the acting gig. Oh snap!
Emma says "I thought Smithdale drama was what every actor wants" to which Manny replies "But there's something to say about having the job everybody at Smithdale drama wants." If everybody at Smithdale drama wants to be on a Degrassi caliber show then that drama program has some major issues. For the first time in her life, Emma actually accepts somebody else's decision, even if it inconveniences her, without throwing a self righteous hissy fit.
Spinner is trying to study but lens flairs are distracting him so he backhands the book and plays the drums instead. Spinner appears to be studying in a classroom but his drum set is also there. I don't know why his drum set would be in a classroom. Maybe this is Spinner's house and he decorated like a classroom to help him study. It didn't work very well.
At the show we learn The Brotherhood's evil plan. They voted Studz into the show so they could throw garbage at them and call them lame. We are suppose to believe Studz put on a really bad show but they are a punk band and I'm pretty sure they are suppose to sound that way. They sound way tighter than the Ramones ever did. I blame the failure of the show on the lack of blood on the masks. Without the blood, bunny masks are just not edgy. Peter runs off stage crying when he gets hit by a plastic cup. Spinner is disgusted with his band. I think this is the end of Studz. They are going to either break up or do a country album.
After the show Spinner talks to the lead singer of the band The Lederhosen. I don't know this guy's name but he sounds like Scott Mosier. Five minutes with this guy makes Spinner realize he either needs to get an education or get in a band that is actually good. Since he's been in several bands over the years, none of which have been good, he decides graduating from high school is the safer bet.
Manny has to dress like a whore for her role on the show. Is it considered acting if you play a character who is exactly like you? Then the costume guy tries to get her to change her shirt in front of him by saying they are all one big family who changes in front of each other and also the show can't afford dressing rooms. Manny makes a comment about the set being a second home when the gay lead of the show says it's like a first home because they never let him leave. He finds out Manny got into Smithdale and straight up asks why she would take this horrible job if she could go there, pointing out that he took the job only because he couldn't get into college and that he can't get an acting job on any other show despite his best efforts. Assuming this teen drama is a representation of Degrassi, I can confidently say this is probably the only time the writers know what they are talking about. Everybody working at Degrassi wishes they could get any other job but they can't.
Spinner was too busy rocking to study. To make matters worse Jimmy got an A+ on the bridge he didn't let Spinner take credit for. Too bad Jimmy didn't make that. He just used his futuristic shrink ray on the Mackinac Bridge and stole it. I'm on to you Jimmy!
Spinner asks Jimmy to tell Spinner everything he knows about physics in the five seconds before exams begin. Jimmy calls Spinner a numb nut.
Spinner is doing so bad on the exam that he starts hallucinating. The roadie from Loverboy comes by and offers Spinner a joint. Spinner doesn't know what to think.
So Spinner uses his powers to set off the sprinklers, causing exams to be delayed for a few days giving him time to study. The man tries to pin it on Spinner but that ain't going to happen. Actually, Jimmy pulled the fire alarm. He helped Spinner out and all he had to do was inconvenience hundreds of people and cause thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Oh and Manny decided to go to college instead of taking the dead end job on Degrassi. I'm not going to bother taking a screencap of that scene. If this is it then I'm done with the review.
This is kind of like a first season episode, Emma in one plot Spinner in the other, although it was more of a Manny plot than an Emma plot, which makes it even better. Plus plenty of Spinner. Spinner is Spinnertastic!
Does It Go There? Yup
Degrassi making fun of itself definitely goes there. They basically said the actors on Degrassi suck and will never work again. Given the track record of actors on Degrassi I would say this is true.
Who Should Get Kicked In The Face This Week? Non Spinner Members of Studz
Way to care more about your schooling than rocking out. That's what a real rock band does. Oh wait, it isn't. You guys are lame.
The episode ends on this freeze frame
You have to go change your pants now.
